I think you are talking about the 990 form, yes? Unfortunately, you could just download this form off the internet, fill it out, and submit it to this contest, without ever submitting it to the IRS. In other words, you could pretend to be a non-profit fairly easily. This is the reason we ask for a pdf of the original letter from the state or IRS that confirms your nonprofit status. If you have been a non-profit for a while and have several years of 990 forms on file at Guidestar, I could be persuaded to let the 990 form stand as proof, because then I would have 3rd party verification. However, I looked up theuniverseandmore and didn't see anything on Guidestar.

No, we are talking about our official state of new jersey annual filing report issued by the state of new jersey. If you provide me with your email, I will send it to you. You can also search the state of new jersey's business records for free and see that The Universe and More, Inc, is a registered nonprofit corporation.

Actually, what you can do in this case is just attach a pdf of the state's web page showing you listed as a non-profit on their site.

Just to make sure you know. The PDF of the screenshot that we are going to be attaching lists our company as an "NP." That stands for nonprofit. Is that acceptable?
I tried to email Merrilea Mayo, as previous posts on this site have suggested, to show her what we want to submit, but I have not heard back from her yet, and I want to be sure that everything is in order when we submit!
Thanks!

Hi, sorry, Merrilea Mayo is me, and I was crunching on another deadline yesterday. Yes, as long as the screenshot shows both NP and the site where the screenshot was taken (so someone can go in and verify), you should be fine.
I'll be going through the emails this morning; thanks so much for the reminder.

FYI: Not every state handles nonprofits the same way (some do not even require filing) but the IRS has every nonprofit listed on their site:
http://www.irs.gov/Charities-&-Non-Profits/Exempt-Organizations-Select-Check
The easiest way of looking up a nonprofit through the IRS is through the nonprofit's EIN. Would it be helpful for us to include that?

Hm, I'm pretty sure that site only lists federally-registered non-profits. When I tried to look up a few non-profits that were registered only at the state level, they didn't show up here. So I guess I'm back to having everyone tell me where their proof of non-profit status lies.
